A Seed is Planted
How a simple request from neighbors became the foundation of something greater.
In the early 2000s, the residents of Tena Estate had a vision — to have a place of worship that was close to home, a church where families could gather without traveling long distances. That vision was shared with ACK St. James Buruburu, and from that conversation, a church plant was born.
ACK St. Thomas Aquinas began as a small congregation meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Awuor. There were no pews, no organ, no towering stained glass — just a family of believers gathered in faith, trusting that God would guide their steps.
Roots Deepen, Branches Spread
Through sacrifice and generosity, the church found its home and grew into a vibrant community.
What started in a living room soon outgrew its walls. Through the generosity of Tena residents and the dedication of early members, the church moved to its present location — a plot of land that would become a sanctuary for generations to come.
Sunday School programs were launched, youth groups formed, and the church became more than a building. It became a family — a place where children were taught, elders were honored, and neighbors became siblings in Christ.
Faith is not a solo journey. It is a family walking together, hand in hand, toward the light of Christ.
A Parish is Born
Official recognition and a new chapter of leadership and ministry.
On May 31, 2017, Bishop Joel Waweru officially named the church ACK St. Thomas Aquinas Tena Church. That same year, the church received an allotment letter for the land from Nairobi City County Government — a tangible sign that God was building something lasting.
In September 2017, ACK St. Thomas Aquinas Tena Church was officially made a parish. Rev. Kenneth Opondo Yuyu was named its first Vicar, marking the beginning of structured leadership and expanded ministry. The church was no longer just a mission outpost — it was a parish with a vision to serve Tena Estate and beyond.
